Oldwise
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 June 2026
Oldwise is a browser extension that lets you select text on a web page and get an AI explanation or summary. This policy explains what data Oldwise handles.
Bring your own key (free mode)
When you use your own AI provider key, nothing is sent to Oldwise's servers.
- Selected text is sent to the AI provider you configured (Google Gemini, OpenAI, DeepSeek, or Anthropic) to generate the answer, and nowhere else.
- Your API key is stored locally on your device using the browser's extension storage. It is sent only to that provider as part of your requests, never to Oldwise.
- Settings and history (your target language, preferences, and the archive of past queries) are stored locally on your device and never leave it.
Subscription mode (Bro and Pro)
If you subscribe and use Oldwise's built-in AI, then for each request:
- Your selected text is sent to the Oldwise backend, which forwards it to our AI provider to generate the answer.
- Your account token authenticates the request.
- We store a usage record (the action, the model used, token counts, the credit cost, and the time) to enforce fair-use limits. We do not store your selected text or the answer.
- Account data (your email and subscription status) is stored to manage your account. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card details.
What we do not do
- We do not run analytics or trackers.
- We do not sell or share your data.
- We do not collect your browsing history.
Third parties
- The AI provider you use processes your selected text to generate answers. Please review that provider's own privacy policy.
- Stripe processes subscription payments under its own privacy policy.
